WHY COOKING MATTERS & THE LITTLE SPITFIRE THAT COULD

Yesterday, I began teaching my 6th Cooking Matters class at a Mission Housing location and completed my 5th class at the Rich Sorro Commons near the ballpark. WEIGHING IN AT A MERE 115 LBS OF PURE BIKE RIDING MUSCLE AND MEASURING JUST UNDER 5'4" .... LITTLE SARAH NELSON Sarah Nelson I have written about Cooking Matters before, but want to give the topic a little more attention. Cooking Matters is a national program whose mission it is to teach lower income people free cooking and nutrition. While Cooking Matters provides the materials and basic curriculum for the classes, [...]

WHAT IS THE COLOMBIAN HOLY TRINITY?

I once volunteered to design a menu for my favorite Colombian restaurant at the time because all they had was a human sized chalk board in Spanish that they would place on a chair at your table when you sat down. They had nothing for the Gringos and God forbid 4 tables sit down at once. Even if you have two human sized chalk boards, that still doesn't cut it. We had a wonderful time relaxing in the balmy heat where my legs, elbows and wrists served as yummy appetizers for mosquitos. Seriously though, we had a wonderful time, mosquito bites and all, with my new big Italian American family. Several of our days were spent at my in-laws beach club, Coveleigh in Rye, NY. This is a very East coast phenomenon. Out West we don't have beach clubs, we just go to the beach. I love the idea of [...]

CHECK ME OUT ON eHOW, Woo Hoo!!!

I have made it to the big time!!, well, according to my mom and those who love me, I have. I made a little video series for eHow recently that includes 10 videos on Summer Party Drinks and Snacks. eHow gave me 35 titles to choose from and I chose the 10 that scared me the least. I shot the videos with video guru, Steven Watkins at Kitchen on Fire in Berkeley, Ca. The folks at KOF were very kind to let me use their wonderful set up. They were gearing up to do a special cooking class for a [...]

NOW I’M PISSED, but mostly sad.

When I wrote about my visit to the Sonoma Foie Gras farm, I had not yet gotten to know the Gonzalez family very well. They seemed nice enough, like many families who move to the US and do more than just make a living, but build a legacy of survival and entrepreneurship for their children. I won't lie to you and tell you that the Gonzalez sisters, Maria and Helena weren't the absolute sweetest people that I met at the first foie gras meeting at Incanto last year. They were delightful, charming and sincere, despite the fact that of everyone [...]
