Hello everyone! I have been in Southern California this week on official RealFoodies business. I will be back next week with a wonderful new food-filled post.
This is a weekend to honor our veterans, enjoy a little much-needed time-off and toast the beginning of summer!
This is not an “official” post, but I would not be me without saying something about food. Today, I satisfied my hunger at a teensy weensy All American burger joint in Long Beach, California. It is literally a tiny shack on the front porch of a house. I was getting ready to jump on the freeway, when I got a serious craving for one of my favorite sandwiches of all time, the Mean Joe Green at MVP’s in the LBC. I walked up and ordered my sandwich and a coke. I waited patiently while I watched people chow down on humongous juicy burgers and hot seasoned fries. The burgery perfume was intoxicating. My belly made noises and I wondered, “Did I make a mistake? Should I have gotten a burger and fries?” I did break down and order a 1/2 order of fries, but waited patiently for my sammich.
My huge bag o “cajun” fries came out and were hot and tasty. My Mean Joe Green followed shortly and did not disappoint. Allow me to break it down. Two slices of thick squaw bread, cream cheese, walnuts, alfalfa sprouts, cucumbers, avocado, tomato and lettuce. I add a little balsamic vinaigrette for good measure. I have mentioned before that I am not into big portions, but I methodically inhaled the entire thing.
Now, I don’t normally write about restaurants that not everyone can go to, but I figured you might want to try this incredible sandwich at home. I am going to give it a go, but will add scallions and if I am feeling wild and crazy, a little jalapeño too!
Ok, that’s it for me. Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. Eat lot’s of great food and let me know how it went. See you next week!
